Dear Fellow Parent,
A recent survey undertaken by the American Organization The
Jumpstart Coalition For Personal Financial Literacy across 40 States
resulted in many students failing basic questions on money management.
The average mean score was 48.3%. That basically means 51.7% of
students failed. In fact further research by the Washington based
Jumpstart Coalition determined that the average student who graduates
from High School lacks basic skills in the management of personal
financial affairs. Many are unable to balance a bank statement and most
simply have no insight into the basic survival principles involved with
Earning, Spending, Saving and Investing. It also found many young
people fail in the management of their first Consumer Credit
experience, establish bad financial management habits, and stumble
through their lives learning by trial and error.
Will this be your child????
Our children are growing up in an ever increasingly complex financial
environment and the statistics are showing record numbers of youth
personal bankruptcies. This consequently has a severe impact on their
quality of life and causes many self-esteem and associated issues.
Society teaches our children of today at an increasingly early age
about the dangers of sex, drugs and alcohol because the sooner they
learn the better. But when it comes to learning how to effectively
handle money - they are the forgotten generation. Let us consider for a
moment a Child or Teenagers View Of The World:
Through The Eyes of A
Child....
A
meal magically appears on the table when you are hungry and if you
and your friends are hungry in between, there's a snack in the fridge
or pantry. An ongoing supply of freshly washed and ironed (well
sometimes) clothes is available for school and going out. New clothes
and shoes arrive when you outgrow the old ones. The social calendar is
full of meeting with friends and birthday parties - you only need
a present to turn up even if you only dragged the surprise invitation
out of your school bag today and the party is tomorrow. Santa (or mum
and dad, I know it's you) delivers the new fad toy you just happened to
want, right on time at christmas. If you go shopping with mum or dad
you just might get that new computer game you so desperately wanted
(although is it worth the risk of your friends seeing you with your
parents). You have to go to all the trendy places over the holidays,
why, because everyone else is.Woops! The first bill for the new cell
phone that I got for emergency use is $100- Oh well! Mum and dad can
pay it because they bought it for me. Flick a switch, press a button or
log on and the T.V., video, play station and the internet are ready to
go. Use the home phone for as long as you like if you feel lonely. Dad,
all the kids at school have got $150 Nike runners, I want a pair too.
Mum, isn't it time you bought us the new Ipod Shuffle, this old Ipod is
hopeless. You only need to turn up and participate in your favourite
sport or hobby - the cost of uniforms, equipment and registration fees
don't need to be mentioned. You have your own personal driver to
chaffeur you and your friends wherever you need to go. Mum obviously
doesn't mind because she has a sign up on the window for all to see
that says Mum's Taxi. Life is great.
P.S. "Dad, can you please give me $15 to go to the movies with my
friends and I promise I'll clean up my room when I get back". Oh! I
need another $10 for pizza afterwards. Bye!!

A Note for Parents:
While I am sure not every child displays
this
ever so cute kind of behaviour, a subtle warning, believe me, it's out
there and to some children it is considered normal. For any parent at
the cutting edge of this experience, sit back, have a cup of coffee or
tea and enjoy the ride with Piggy Banks To Porsches.
Will You
Have Your Own Financial Crisis At Home???
Research is showing that when
asked most High School students are saying they learn all they know
about money from their parents. It is obvious then that most simply
aren't learning what they need at home. If you thought your child will
learn all they need at school - think again!! Whilst it is great to see
that some schools have had Personal Financial Literacy built into the
curriculum it is yet to be introduced to all schools. Even if they are
having lessons at school it is simply not enough to leave it at that.
Your child needs practical re-inforcement at home and needs to be
consistently handling money on a regular basis. It is never to early or
late to begin learning about money.
